Orleans veterans panel refines Korean War and Vietnam memorial designs, defers font vote. Chair Kevin Higgins and members Cecil Newcomb, Alan Chase and Andrew reviewed sculptor Tom Blute's revised Korean War bronze plaque, built around Marines withdrawing from the Chosen Reservoir, and asked him to declutter the scene and shrink an "aircraft carrier" that looked "dry docked." The Vietnam Memorial's granite base, 12 feet by 3 feet with 4-foot, 8-inch-tall angled wings, won general approval, but members postponed voting on the lettering font and kept debating whether to engrave 1965-1973 or other federally recognized war dates, with one member warning "dates can't be erroneous." Separately, a volunteer told the board Veterans Memorial Park's new flower beds are badly overgrown, calling the crabgrass "bad." The committee also confirmed the Civil War soldier statue on Monument Road will be restored in Canton before Memorial Day 2027.
