ORLEANS — The Orleans Marine and Freshwater Quality Committee reported its Pilgrim Lake herring count plunged to an estimated 456 fish this year, down from more than 26,000 in 2017 and 2018. Longtime volunteer Judy Scanlan called the decline "disturbing," noting only 50 fish were visually counted between April 4 and May 31 despite roughly 75 volunteers. Member Mary Griffin cautioned against overloading the committee's charge with task-level detail, distinguishing a "charge" from a "work plan." Carol Etzold reported Nauset Middle School septic leachate as the principal phosphorus source in a town pond under study by the Wastewater Management Advisory Committee.
The committee voted 7-0 to approve prior minutes and moved its December meeting to December 14.
