Committee backs geothermal wells for fire station
Orleans's fire station design committee voted to direct its design team to proceed with planning a geothermal heating system for the new station.
Other Committee · Meeting of October 26, 2026
Orleans's fire station design committee voted to direct its design team to proceed with planning a geothermal heating system for the new station. The design team told members a ground source heat pump system could save the town roughly $400,000 over an air-source alternative once Mass Save rebates and a federal tax credit are applied, despite costing about $1.8 million more upfront. Committee member Kathy McNamara raised concerns that the proposed well site near the elementary school grounds should go before the Orleans School Committee first, saying "I think a little bit of the elephant in the room is just concerns about chipping away at property that was originally designated to be the schools." The team also said it will seek three zoning variances and a special permit from the Zoning Board of Appeals on December 2, and expects test-well results and an updated construction estimate by mid-December.
