Other Committee · Meeting of October 21, 2026
ORLEANS — The Orleans Open Space Committee backed the Orleans Conservation Trust's pending purchase of a 0.7-acre parcel at 149 Monument Road near Pilgrim Lake. A trust trustee told the committee an offer has been accepted, with purchase and sale execution expected the next day, and said the parcel is mapped as critical natural landscape near a herring run within the Pleasant Bay Area of Critical Environmental Concern. The trust hopes to submit a joint application to the Community Preservation Committee by November, discussing a town ask near $250,000 against a roughly $510,000 purchase price.
CPC representative Mark Russo cautioned that "the scissors came out" on past applications but called this one strong. The committee also heard that a town staff task force, including harbormaster Nate Sears and conservation commissioner John Janelle, has formed to plan the future of 72 Tonset Road, bought two years ago for municipal purposes.
