Orleans panel votes 3-1 to delay sign permit
Other Committee · Meeting of August 27, 2026
Orleans Architectural Review Committee splits 3-1 to postpone a sign and lighting permit after the applicant never showed. Chair Kelly McCarthy presided as members debated whether two proposed "onion-type sconce-style" light fixtures violated the town's outdoor lighting bylaw, chapter 122, which one member said exists to "reduce glare, encourage energy savings" and limit light trespass. One member argued against delay, saying "I don't like to delay somebody, if they're getting it produced," but the postponement carried.
Separately, members raised doubts about whether the town's new fire station will ever come before the committee for design review, noting the police station never did, and voted to add a general fire station discussion to their next agenda. The meeting adjourned by unanimous vote.
