Other Committee · Meeting of July 28, 2026

Orleans Veterans Committee advances Korean War memorial design and debates QR code history project for rebuilt park. The committee, meeting July 28 under Chairman Kevin Higgins, reviewed a preliminary bronze plaque design for the Korean War Memorial featuring a Chosin Reservoir centerpiece in raised relief on an India Red granite block, with 97 names to be inscribed; the full committee will select from several designer proofs before any final approval. Two newly appointed members, Melissa Phillips, a Coast Guard Reserves veteran, and Alan Chase, a retired Navy officer who commissioned in 1992 and served more than two decades in Northeast Asia, were introduced.

The committee also formally absorbed the duties of the town's veteran grave officer after no replacement came forward for the role previously held by a retired Marine colonel, and now stores flags and bronze markers in a police-station locker. On QR codes, advisor Michael urged the group to focus on content creation over hardware: "The QR code you can make in five seconds — the real work is creating that video." Member Cecil Newcomb called for a dedicated work session on the topic, and the committee's next regular meeting is set for August 25.
