Orleans delays decision on joint school building bid
School Committee · Meeting of September 14, 2026
Orleans School Committee stalls on joining Brewster's school building bid. Town Manager Kim told the committee Brewster wants to apply to the Massachusetts School Building Authority as early as January to consolidate its two elementary schools and is pressing Orleans to say within months whether it wants in, warning "I don't know that I want to spend the next couple of months convincing the community that we're ready when I don't know that we are." Superintendent Glenn said Orleans' own facilities assessment, overdue since September 1, will inform the decision, and noted a new building would need to hold roughly 230-plus students to qualify under MSBA rules. Committee member Gail Breer praised the regional steering committee's work as "really open and honest." In other business, the committee unanimously approved Gina Goncalves as its new recording secretary, Finance Director Beth reported the district has spent 13 percent of its budget two months into the fiscal year, and Town Facilities Manager Ron Collins said crews replaced 127 sprinkler heads in the elementary school's K-2 wing over the summer.
