Orleans board approves two Pleasant Bay boathouses

Conservation · Meeting of August 18, 2026

Orleans conservation board approves two Pleasant Bay boathouse overhauls after months of light-pollution debate. The commission, chaired by Drusilla Henson, voted 7-0-0 to approve a redesigned boathouse at 34 Jack Knife Point Road that cut its skylight count from eight to six and reduced window glass, and voted 7-0-0 to approve an amended order for a smaller boathouse at 77 Keziahs Lane with no cupola or skylights at all. Henson told architect Peter Haig the design still had "too much glass being added to a view shed," while Haig argued "it's going to be impossible for this body or anybody to regulate how somebody is going to use" the structure.

The board also voted 7-0-0 to deny an administrative review of a retaining-wall and stairway project at 65 Herring Brook Way, ruling the work needed a formal application, and unanimously approved negative determinations for two REEF Builders renovations on Tides End Lane and an updated set of standard permit conditions covering dumpster placement and lawn reseeding.
