Fire Station Panel Rejects Composting Toilets
Other Committee · Meeting of August 31, 2026
Orleans fire station panel votes 9-0 to reject composting toilets, backing conventional septic instead. Project architect Ted, of design firm TGAS, told the Building Committee no public safety facility nationally uses composting toilets and that a parallel plumbing system risked a Massachusetts bid-law protest. The vote turned aside a $400 feasibility study the town's Wastewater Management Advisory Committee had unanimously recommended August 13 after resident and Finance Committee member Dave Abel connected officials with the nonprofit Nutrient Networks.
Committee member David Little said his own home composting-toilet plans fell through once he learned the state still required a full backup Title 5 septic system. A separate fight over the station's already-decided standing seam metal roof resurfaced, with member Peter Kaneen arguing the town is "spending three to four times the amount of money" compared with asphalt shingles. Two independent cost estimates are due by early December.
