Orleans water quality committee advances two major pond projects. Planning Director George Meservey reported that Baker Pond alum treatment moved to bidding after Town Meeting approval of Warrant Article 31, which secured $215,000 for water quality initiatives including Cedar Pond sediment evaluation and $10,000 in expert services. Vice Chair Richard Levy reported the herring run count fell below 50 fish, less than half the 2025 total, while the committee expanded cyanobacteria monitoring to seven ponds and seeks town funding of $1,500 each for Crystal and Pilgrim Lakes starting in FY2028.
Committee members also recruited six new estuary sampling volunteers at a Farmers Market booth and scheduled July 8 volunteer training in Chatham.
