Herring run update highlights improvements toward naturalized fishway design

ORLEANS — Marine and Fresh Water Quality Committee receives herring run update and sets sampling schedule. Nate Sears, Town Natural Resources Manager, reported that the Pilgrim Lake herring run fishway improvement project is in conceptual design phase, funded by a $1 million federal grant and $400,000 town match, plus $1.2 million from NRCS and $375,000 from the state for culvert and drainage work. Estuary sampling is scheduled for July 16, August 3 and 17, and September 1 and 15; PALS sampling will occur during April 13 and 20 weeks.
The committee voted 6-0-1 to approve revised March 3 minutes and unanimously approved adjournment. Construction on the herring run is expected to take approximately two years.
