Orleans police chief says body cameras are overdue, eyes an Axon rollout by next summer. The chief told the Select Board the department waited to see how other Massachusetts agencies fared before committing, noting Orleans is one of just three Cape Cod police departments without the devices, and cited the Cape and Islands district attorney's office's existing Axon software as a reason to match that vendor over Motorola. "Without a doubt, it is time," the chief said.
The board separately adopted a $26.3 million interim loan for Phase 3 sewer construction, after town meeting-authorized borrowing of $40 million came in under bid; approved a new all-alcoholic liquor license for Nor'East Beer Garden Orleans Inc. at 45 Main Street; and voted 4-0-1 to adopt a townwide special events policy. Residents Charlie Carlson and Bill Amaru pushed a citizen's petition for Nauset Estuary cleanup standards, but the Wastewater Management Advisory Committee, chaired by board member Kevin Galligan, voted unanimously August 27 to oppose it.
