Board splits 2-3 on $450,000 for 44 Main St
Select Board · Meeting of September 30, 2026
Orleans Select Board votes 2-3 against recommending $450,000 for 44 Main Street. The board first rejected a combined capital budget article 1-4 before splitting it in two, letting routine items like $134,000 for CPR chest compression machines and $150,000 for town hall painting pass 5-0 while 44 Main Street failed to win a recommendation. Vice Chair Michael Herman argued "we've been talking about this building for six years," while member Mary Wright said she was "concerned about signaling that size of an investment" before a facilities assessment projecting $2.5 million a year in needs.
The board also voted 4-0-1 to seek an extra $250,000 from the Community Preservation Committee for Eldridge Park, funded a $100,000 Pochet Marsh nitrogen study that could offset sewering 400 homes, and unanimously declined to recommend both a Finance Committee wastewater-study petition and a $300,000 citizens' petition on Nauset Estuary cleanup.
