Orleans Cultural Council Shifts Art Show to November 13, Debates Movie Night Funding

ORLEANS — June 1, 2026 — Orleans Cultural Council sets November 13 student art show date and weighs outdoor movie co-sponsorship. The council, meeting June 1, voted to hold its annual student art show on Friday, November 13, at 6 p.m. at Town Hall after a scheduling conflict with the Architectural Review Committee ruled out the initially approved November 12 date; artwork from the high school, middle school, elementary school, and Lighthouse Charter School must be submitted by November 6. Treasurer Brian reported the council's request to raise its annual town appropriation from $2,000 to $3,000 was not approved at Town Meeting, leaving the council working with approximately $2,600 in its warrant fund. On a Recreation Department proposal to co-sponsor an outdoor screening of the 1985 Cape-filmed comedy "One Crazy Summer" on the village green, members declined to commit the requested $3,000, with Brian stating "we have limited budget," and signaled a willingness to contribute no more than $1,800 for equipment rental pending a written proposal from Recreation Director Thomas. The council also approved a new color-coded registration system to streamline artwork sorting and agreed to retain an August 3 check-in meeting, in addition to the August 31 session, after members expressed concern about losing two months of momentum during the summer recess.
