Orleans Conservation Commission Votes to Seek $125,000 From Town Meeting for Conservation Fund

ORLEANS — February 3, 2026 — Orleans Conservation Commission votes 7-0 to seek $125,000 from Annual Town Meeting to replenish conservation fund. The commission, chaired by Drusilla Henson and including Conservation Agent John Jannell, approved the warrant article request after debating figures ranging from $80,000 to $150,000, with Member Judith Bruce moving the final amount and Member Dick Hilmer seconding; Hilmer cited rising project costs and the lesson of the Putnam barn project, saying "prices are going up steadily and next thing you know we're caught once again." The commission also unanimously approved a raze-and-rebuild at 199 Namequoit Road for applicant John H. Ferring IV, attaching conditions including a construction limit of work not to exceed the 50-foot coastal bank buffer, native-species driveway plantings, and a mandatory pre-construction meeting, with no order to issue until revised plans are received within 21 days. Landscaping and hardscaping alterations at 17 Marsh Lane for owners Richard J. Long and Elizabeth M. Charm were also approved 7-0, with a special condition requiring downward-facing lighting.
