Veterans panel OKs Vietnam memorial design, 5-0

Other Committee 2026-09-24 Part 2 · Meeting of September 24, 2026

Orleans Veterans Committee approves Vietnam memorial design, splits 4-1 on lettering. Chairman Kevin Higgins moved the panel's meeting up to September 24 and welcomed three new members, Melissa Phillips, Cecil Newcomb and Alan Chase, before a 5-0 vote adopted the final Vietnam Veterans Memorial design of two wings, a center bevel and a dated base. Members then split over lettering, with Higgins warning "this will never be done by Memorial Day if we keep dragging on," while Andrew Delorey said "I don't feel the urgency" and cast the lone no vote as the board chose one-inch Vermeco lettering, 4-1.

The committee also tabled a revised Korean War memorial bronze plaque design, debating whether Polaroid-style service-branch images clutter the central Chosin Reservoir scene, and heard that about 100 memorial bricks arrive October 1 for installation by the Caliban group.
