Agricultural Advisory Council · Meeting of August 10, 2026
Orleans Agricultural Advisory Council heard that the new Putnam Farm barn was completed on budget and is ready for use by 15 confirmed growers. Conservation Administrator John Jannell said the barn, funded by a Massachusetts Food Security and Infrastructure Grant, will get a ribbon-cutting on October 1, with the state agriculture secretary expected to attend. Jannell said more than a dozen growers remain on a waiting list ahead of Phase 5, a final 1.15-acre plot expansion funded through the Community Preservation Committee.
The council welcomed new member Ryan Birchall, an art department chair at Nauset Regional High School, and heard Chair Peter Jensen describe a push for Orleans to become one of the first East Coast communities with an "Ocean Friendly Community" designation from the Surfrider Foundation. Members voted unanimously to skip their October meeting due to a room conflict with Indigenous Peoples Day.
