Orleans Cultural District votes $1,800 in First Friday grants, plans summer hiatus

ORLEANS — April 27, 2026 — Orleans Cultural District approves First Friday business grants and maps survival plan as membership falls. The committee voted unanimously at its April 27 meeting to allocate up to $1,800 from its cultural district grant fund to support four businesses participating in the First Friday program in June and July, with a May 11 application deadline and any additional applicants subject to a separate vote. Staff — identified in the transcript as Tom and Jamie — outlined a proposal for the committee to vote in June to authorize the Recreation Department to manage Cultural District funds and programming through a two-month summer hiatus, after two member terms expire July 1 and leave the board at its three-member quorum minimum. The Massachusetts Cultural Council requires at least eight members for recertification by July 1, 2027, a threshold that also carries access to an estimated $15,000 in additional future funding. The committee also voted to pay a sound technician identified as Frank $150 for three hours of work at an Arts Week Poetry Slam, against a competing quote of $500, and tabled a request to sponsor a local author's book launch pending development of a formal local artist spotlight policy.
