Finance panel votes to forward sewer cost findings
Orleans Finance Committee votes unanimously to forward sewer-versus-alternatives cost findings to town boards.
Finance Committee · Meeting of August 27, 2026
Orleans Finance Committee votes unanimously to forward sewer-versus-alternatives cost findings to town boards. Members David Abel and Todd Sullivan presented figures showing Phase 4 sewer construction would cost roughly $45 million for 310 homes, against $7 million to $9 million for composting or urine-diversion systems, an 80 percent reduction Sullivan said holds even if estimates are off by half. Sullivan projected the town's remaining 2,500 sewer parcels, Phases 6 through 16, would require another $850 million, pushing per-parcel costs toward $300,000 and in some phases near $500,000.
Member Tony Pearl called the numbers "so stark that I think that this needs to be brought soon to the select board." The 8-0 roll-call vote forwards the findings to the Wastewater Management Advisory Committee, the Board of Water and Sewer Commissioners, the Select Board and DPW, with members racing a September 23 warrant-article deadline for the November 16 Town Meeting. Separately, member Richard Berdik reported the Wastewater Management Advisory Committee voted to recommend a roughly $400 urine-diversion feasibility study for the town's new fire station.
