Orleans Water Quality Panel Votes to Rewrite Decade-Old Committee Charge

ORLEANS — June 29, 2026 — Orleans water quality committee votes to rewrite its 2015 charge as town reviews all advisory panels. The Marine and Freshwater Quality Committee voted 7-0 at its June 29 meeting to authorize Chair Carolyn Audie and member Mary Griffin to revise the committee's formal eleven-item charge, which members said understates the committee's active role in recruiting and training volunteers, collecting water samples, and translating scientific findings for the Select Board and town meeting voters. The vote comes as the town manager's office and Select Board are reviewing charges for every town committee, with some already scheduled for board action this week. Members also heard that the 2026 herring count stands at roughly 50 fish — down from 113 in 2025 and a peak of 2,174 in 2023 — and reviewed a cyanobacteria season that has already produced health warnings at Baker's Pond, Crystal Lake, and Uncle Harvey's Pond. Health Agent Meredith Ballinger, attending her first committee meeting, clarified that the town posted health warnings, not advisories, meaning the ponds were not closed. The Orleans Pond Coalition separately reported it has deployed a real-time cyanobacteria monitoring buoy in Pilgrim Lake at a cost of approximately $1,000 per month, fully funded by OPC with no cost to the town.
