Orleans Open Space Committee Re-Elects Officers, Weighs Limits of Advisory Role

Other Committee · Meeting of June 17, 2026

Orleans Open Space Committee reorganizes leadership and confronts new town limits on advisory work. The committee, meeting June 17, unanimously re-elected Chair Lynn and Vice Chair David to continue in their roles and re-nominated Chris as clerk, after member Hardy announced his final meeting. Lynn informed members that the Orleans Select Board and town manager's office are running a four-stage review of all advisory committees, driven by concerns about legal liability when panels take on work outside their charge.

"They shouldn't be doing projects for the town," Lynn said, relaying the Select Board's framing. The review prompted the committee to reconsider its planned open space awareness campaign, with members agreeing to develop message content and hand it to town communications staff rather than produce materials directly. The committee is seeking two associate members, left its Community Preservation Committee liaison seat unfilled, canceled its July 15 meeting, and tentatively kept an August 19 date on the calendar.
